1.3 Chambers or Bottles:
A.Collection: Nearest the client– Collects fluid
drainage from the client. MUST never come into contact with the fluid coming
from the client nor Bottle Two.
B.Water Seal: Serves to prevent air from entering
the client’s pleural space. The bubbling from the Water Seal Chamber is
usually seen during exhalation, coughing, or sneezing. There should always be
some bubbling in this Chamber, if not, check for kinks or blocks. Excessive
bubbling indicates an air leak within the system. A rise of 2-4 inches during inhalation and
a corresponding fall during exhalation are normal.
C.Bottle Three: Suction: During suctioning, the
RN should notice gentle bubbling in the chamber.
2. Record the
amt. of drainage in the collection chamber more than 100 cc/h is excessive
notify MD.
3. If there is
continuous bubbling in the water seal chamber, obtain an MD order and clamp
the tube (using padded clamps) close to the site of the occlusive dressing.
If bubbling stops, leak is at the insertion site or within the chest. If
bubbling doesn’t stop, indicates a lean between the clamp and the drainage
system.
